Age and method of cultivation
Age and cultivation method
The method of cultivation is denoted by the formula where after the abbreviation of the tree species name the subsequent first number indicates number of vegetation periods before being nursed, cut or covered, the second number indicates number of vegetation periods after this intervention, accuracy ± 0.5 year. The sum of both numbers in the formula indicates the growing time in the nursery (the age of planting material).
Examples of cultivation method of planting material:
- 1 + 0 is a one-year bare-root seedling grown in uncovered mineral soil;
- 1-1 is a two-year bare-root seedbed grown in uncovered mineral soil; the root system was cut between the first and second vegetation period.
- 1 + 2 is a three-year bare-root seedling grown in uncovered mineral soil; the bare-root seedling was again transferred in its first year into uncovered mineral soil where the plant was cultivated for the next two years.
f1 + k1 is a two-year covered-root seedling; a one-year bare-root seedling grown in an artificial cover was transferred into the cover where the plant was grown for the following year
